Contrail Controller Series: Meet Blue Lines – Accelerating Awareness and Action

We have recently encountered a fellow contrail adversary, Blue Lines. Similar to us at End the Lines, Blue Lines works toward raising awareness of contrails and their impact on the environment.

One of the most interesting elements of the Blue Lines website is the Airline Contrail Index, which provides a list of all the airlines that have publicly pledged their commitment to mitigate contrails through research, trial flights, or collaboration. There aren’t many names on that list yet, but as more breakthroughs in contrail avoidance are discovered and reported we are certain that more airlines will commit to the cause.

The organization was founded by Joachim Majholm, who is passionate about spreading the word on all things contrails. His passion led him to launch blue-lines.org where he shares the latest news and research surrounding contrail management. He believes that “[t]he stories of the contrail solutions that brilliant engineers and scientists are working on deserve to reach a much bigger audience.” 1 We couldn’t agree more.

Joachim has taken his desire to make a difference in combating the changing climate and acted on it by sharing his knowledge of contrails not only on his website, but also on the Aerospace Ambition podcast (another great resource for contrail information). There he shared what got him into contrails and how he sees this as a great opportunity for aviation to make an immediate impact on its contribution to the warming climate.

We have had the pleasure of meeting Joachim and having a brief chat about his work, and can verify his commitment to contrail mitigation. He shared that, along with his work at Blue Lines, he is now offering his expertise to the RMI Contrail Impact Task Force to help as a contrail consultant. The task force is making great strides in contrail research and working towards clarifying some of the uncertainties surrounding implementing contrail management.

The more organizations like Blue Lines, the better. Raising awareness of the impact of contrails and the feasibility of the solution is a key step in ultimately ending the lines. Keep up the excellent work Joachim and Blue Lines!
