On May 10, 2023, Google Research hosted a coding competition to identify contrails. Competitors used geostationary satellite images from the  GOES-16 Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI), which is publicly available on Google Cloud Storage. The goal of competitions like this is to help researchers improve the accuracy of contrail models.
If we can accurately predict where contrails will form, we can alter flight paths to avoid creating contrails and reduce their impact on climate change.
Participants had to submit their data by August 9th to qualify. You can learn more about the competition, rules, sample code, results, and more here. Â
Keep an eye out for similar competitions in which you can make an impact towards ending the lines. Ready, set, find those contrails!
